MEDEXIS is a biotechnology company that identifies, develops and commercializes new life science technologies.
A special focus of the company is to foster products to detect or treat human disease.
Founded in 2002, Medexis is a member of the Gerolymatos International Group of Companies (GI) based in Athens,
Greece. GI has a strong international presence (Europe, America, Australia, South Asia, Africa) and an impressive
track record in the development and sale of a wide range of products in the health & beauty sector.
MEDEXIS has a growing portfolio of therapeutic and diagnostic projects that address unmet needs in oncology.
The company has recently developed and approved an In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD), PCR-based kit for the detection
of Circulating Tumor Cells in biological samples of breast cancer patients (CK-19 Quantification Kit; to be
launched in Q2 2010). Several drug candidates showing potent in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity are
currently being pursued in pre-clinical trials.
MEDEXIS works closely with individual scientists, corporations and academic institutions throughout Europe
and the United States. The company is based in Athens (Kryoneri), Greece.
Medexis's Research & Development program focuses on the development of small molecule therapeutics
directed against the membrane androgen receptor (mAR), a novel drug target implicated in various forms
of cancer. Medexis has already identified several potential lead candidates with significant activity
in preclinical anti-cancer models and is currently in the process of validating selected lead compounds
in various assays & models.
Medexis hopes to identify a final drug candidate that will enter preclinical safety & toxicology
studies within 2010. Additional early discovery projects on a series of novel cancer targets are
also being pursued.
Long-term R&D interests include:
- Selection and preclinical development of a small molecule mAR targeting drug candidate and
one back up molecule towards first in man clinical trials in cancer patients.
Current status: pre-clinical
- Discovery and identification of early compound hits targeting a novel cancer related molecule(s).
Current status: discovery
Medexis is pursuing its R & D efforts in close contact with Greek Academic Institutions such as the University
of Crete and the National Hellenic Research Foundation. Notably, specific aspects of Medexis's projects are
being addressed in collaboration with contract research organizations (CROs) in the US, Europe or elsewhere.
These collaborating organizations operate in the broader field of preclinical services (CROs offering in vitro
and in vivo efficacy studies, ADMET studies etc), formulation and manufacturing.
Medexis main future objective is to become a clinical trial stage company having concluded preclinical
safety and toxicology studies and successful IND application with at least one drug candidate within
the following 2-3 years. The company also aims at exploiting potential R & D collaborations and/or
licensing agreements with third parties for further development of the company's projects.
Medexis is seeking to conclude out-licensing or co-development agreements with strategic partner(s)
for further development of its compounds either at a late preclinical stage or post IND application approval.
