Established in 1998, BSRC Al. Fleming is one of Greece's leading specialist research organisations in Biomedical Sciences.
Fleming has a scientific staff of over 120, organised into 15 research groups in 4 Research Institutes: Immunology;
Molecular Biology & Genetics; Molecular Oncology and Cellular & Developmental Biology.
Fleming's main research areas include
- Mouse genetics and Functional genomics (high throughput mutagenesis)
- Modelling of human disease in animal models (mouse and drosophila)
- Drug screening in animal and cellular disease models
- Ribonomics
- Stem Cells
- Gene regulation and Epigenetics
- MicroRNAs and bioinformatics
A particular feature of Fleming's research profile is the central role of the use of animal models of human disease, particularly mouse models.
Indeed, as Greece's largest operational mouse facility, we are a leading centre of mouse research within Europe. As such, Fleming coordinates
a major European-wide network for mouse models of immunological disease (MUGEN www.mugen-noe.org), and will represent south-east Europe in a
new mouse archiving and phenotyping infrastructure for Europe which is currently in the development phase (www.infrafrontier.eu).
Some of the institute's achievements between 1999-2008 include
- 178 high impact publications in scientific journals (Average impact factor: 7.4);
- 5 patent applications
- The award of 54 competitive research grants (mostly from the European Union, but also from HFSP, EMBO, NIH, AICR, March of Dimes); Total value 14.5 million euro;
- The coordination of 5 major EU-wide collaborative programs;
- The election of three staff as members of the European Molecular Biology Organization;
- The creation of a spin-off company focusing on translational research (Biomedcode);
- A strong record of training students in EU training networks (8 grants);
- The award of the status of a Greek center of excellence in an independent review commissioned by the Greek government in 2005.
Fleming encourages all of its researchers to undertake translational as well as basic research and researchers work collaboratively with
companies of all sizes and from all over the world. Indeed Fleming has its own spin-off company, BioMedCode, which provides pre-clinical
drug evaluation services to pharmaceutical companies using disease animal models. Fleming's work with companies is varied, ranging from
services to full R&D collaborations, as well as licenses of the institute's technologies. Fleming's researchers also actively collaborate
with US Universities, and have established collaborations with multiple US Universities.
As a young institution, Fleming is still in its initial growth phase. The latest institute of Cellular & Developmental Biology is currently
recruiting its initial staff under its newly appointed Director. In addition, the Institute of Microbiology and Virology is in the planning
stage. Fleming actively recruits new staff from overseas, and indeed more than half of our group heads were recruited from the international
market, including the US, thus greatly enhancing staff profile.
Fleming is active in all aspects of technology transfer, and has a dedicated Innovation and Enterprise Unit (www.fleming.gr/techtransfer),
which acts as a one-stop-shop for all aspects of the successful exploitation of inventions and technologies arising from Fleming research activities.
- Cellular Drug Screening Assay for Targeting the Cytoskeleton in Rheumatoid (Institute of Immunology)
- Autotaxin: a New Therapeutic Target in Chronic Inflammatory Disorders & Cancer (Institute of Immunology)
- Targeting Post-transcriptional Regulators in Inflammation and Cancer (Institute of Immunology)
- Towards Early Interventions for Cognitive Disorders (Institute of Molecular Biology & Genetics)
- HO-1/IRF-3 - a new target for Infectious and Immune Diseases (Institute of Immunology)
Detailed descriptions of the above technologies are available from HBio or from the Institute's tech transfer office upon request.
